Julian Gollop wanted to make a sequel with an isometric view. Since MicroProse was publishing the hit Civilization at the time, they asked if Mythos Games could implement more strategy elements to the game. This is how the foundation of XCOM’s SLG strategy guide layer was born. Firaxis paid tribute to Laser Squad as well by imitating the game’s cover art for XCOM: Enemy Unknown’s box
Story-wise, we found the strings that weaved the plot together were a little far-fetched, but then again the series was never based on a completely believable storyline. As is always the case in an XCOM title, humanity is forced to adopt alien technology and use it against the occupying force, eventually leading to a one-chance strike that can bring the aliens to their kn
Whenever a soldier dies, they will drop all their gear. This can be quite punishing if that gear is not recovered. To get it back, players can have a soldier carry the fallen companion to the Evac a
If you’re playing XCom 2 , and you encounter a human-looking enemy that has white hair and a purple visor that covers the entire face, have all your soldiers target that enemy. That is probably the only chance of successfully completing that mission. That type of enemy is called an Avatar, and thankfully they are rare. They have extremely high mobility, armor, and damage potential. To make matters worse, Avatars have powerful psionic abilities as well. Many aliens can mind control the player’s soldiers; Avatars can mind control up to three at one time. This enemy can kill a well-equipped squad by itself if it’s not dealt with quic
Three years after XCOM: Enemy Unknown took the strategy world by storm and proved that turn-based titles could still shake up the industry, Firaxis has followed up with a successor that is certainly capable of carrying on the name. Within XCOM 2 , players will find a challenging title that not only improves on the core gameplay experience from the original game, but adds plenty of new elements to keep die-hard fans on their t
Ethereals are the leaders of the alien forces. They have numerous, and powerful psionic abilities that can cause havoc among the player’s squad and deliver significant damage. Their deadliest abilities are the ability to control the minds of the player’s soldiers, and the ability to drain a soldier’s health and heal itself at the same time with its Psi Drain. To make them even more difficult, Ethereals have the Hardened trait that makes them highly resistant to critical hits. Ethereals also have a devastating one-two punch with their Mindfray, which lowers a soldier’s Will, and their Rift ability which deals extra damage to a soldier with a low Will sc
XCOM 2 introduces plenty of new gameplay elements that fit this new style, like player-placed extraction zones, the aforementioned ambushes, and a complete restructuring of character classes to reflect the focus on guerrilla combat. Players will find themselves thinking hard about which classes to bring into a particular firefight, and finding the right combination of soldier types will be a hard-fought trial-and-error process. Likewise, when players start in concealment – a new stealth aspect that is brand new to the franchise – they’ll find themselves tediously organizing ambushes to maximize their overwatch impact, and we found the new gameplay complimented XCOM 2 quite nic
These are the leaders of the Sectoid soldiers, and besides having higher base stats they also have devastating psionic attacks. Sectoid Commanders have four psionic abilities: Mind Control, Mindfray, Greater Mind Merge, and Psi Panic. The Mind control is especially nefarious, as it gives the Sectoid Commander complete control of a soldier in the player’s squad for three turns. Most mind controlled soldiers do not survive the mission. The Mind Merge gives all Sectoids in battle decent bonuses to Will (morale), health, and critical hit chance. The worst aspect is it is very difficult to distinguish commanders from normal Secto
Needless to say, the game’s development was a nightmare . The main issue was a development split between MicroProse wanting to create the visuals of the game while Mythos Games developed the other systems. Since MicroProse didn’t understand the isometric view the title was going for, however, the two teams ended up harming each other’s progress towards finishing the g
Most games with a lot of text based dialogue usually have the option to let scenes play out automatically. Persona 5 Strikers is a good example that does this well. This game does not have that feature meaning one has to manually skip through text boxes as conversations wrap up. It’s not a huge grievance but it would be nice to see upgra
Now, this might be because the original Nintendo Switch hardware is struggling to keep up with development in its fifth year. Either way the frequent use of loads and the time itself adds up into annoyances however small they may
