Ethnic tribes of Majuli are important part of the heritage and identity of Majuli. There are three kinds of Ethnic tribes in Majuli. Mising, Deuri and Sonowal Kachari are the three Ethnic tribes of Majuli.
Misings: With a population 63,572; constituting 42% of the total population of Majuli (According to cencus2001), the Misings who belong to the Burmese branch of the Mongoliods, are the Most important tribal community of Majuli. Their life style and culture are major parts of Majuli tourism.
Deoris: The Deoris believed to be the priestly class of the Chutiyas, who originated from the Tibeto-Burmese branch of the Mongoliods, have a population of 3,498 in Majuli(according to census 2001). Their homes, farms village economies are too similar to those of the Misings. Keeping their own dialect and culture, the Deoris of Majuli celebrate Bihu, apart from their own Hurairangali, a dance from. They are mainly concentrating in the two villages of Major Deoris and Siram Deoris. Major Deori is located at a distance of 6 km to the east of Jengraimukh while Sriram Deori is located 7 km to the south-east of Jengraimukh.
Sonowal Kocharies: According to census 2001; 1,071 people of this community are in Majuli. Most of them reside in the Sonowal kachari village, which is about 3km to the east of the Natu Bazar in upper Majuli. They are of Bodo origin, the Tibet-Burmese branch of the Mongoliods. This community was engaged in the collection of gold out of the sands of the Sobansiri and other rivers of Assam during the reign of the Chutiya and Ahom Kings. Haidang, Hagra and Bahuwa are the main dance from of the Sonowal Kacharis.
